Air - Moon Safari (1998)

Updated: Apr 21, 2023

It's chill out time, with Air's debut, Moon Safari. I was introduced to this by a friend the year after release, and heard it a lot at the time, before it drifted from by consciousness. Then, a couple of years ago, the same friend persuaded me along to a gig in Canterbury, where a student group re-created the album (for its 20th birthday), as I remember, a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Le Femme D'Argent kicks off, instrumental, relaxing, a lovely start, before the mildly irritating Sexy Boy. All I Need, is a short, pleasant song, leading into the tedious Kelly Watch The Stars. Talisman flows by, making little impact, as does Remember. You Make It Easy is listenable, but lightweight, and the rest of the album, mostly instrumental, drifts by - chilled out, but lacking any substance or challenge.

This was a disappointing listen, because I enjoyed the live performance, but that often doesn't translate to great home listening.

2* - some pleasant background pieces, but nothing more.
