Ash were one of the Britpop band I heard bits of and quite liked, so picked up the CD when I saw it cheap. For some reason I've barely listened since, and it's been consigned to the upstairs drawers
Starting off well with the loud drums and guitar thrash Lose Control, the singles Goldfinger and Girl From Mars are still sounding good. But it all becomes ordinary fare until the ace two minute romp Kung Fu and the joyful Oh Yeah. Most of the rest is very ordinary - Angel Interceptor rocks hard, but those harmony 'oohs' and 'ahs' really irritate, while Lost In You sounds just awful - at times like an out of tune Strangers In The Night. Darkside Lightside ought to bring the album to a solid conclusion, but there's the tedium of a hidden track (or it would be hidden if the CD player hadn't told me Darkside Lightside was nearly 17 minutes long), where we get to enjoy seven minutes of silence before a couple of minutes of the band dicking about. Silly.
3* - a few good tracks, but plenty of filler. Could have been a pretty good 35-40 minute album!
