“She stayed with me until she moved to Notting Hill
She said it was the place she had to be,
Where the cocaine is Fair Trade and frequently displayed,
Is the Buena Vista Social Club CD”
So said Half Man Half Biscuit of this album's ubiquity at a certain time.
If sitting between Tim Buckley and Buzzcocks on the shelf is display, then I’m guilty. It’s another one I picked up for a quid in a charity shop, to see what all the fuss was about, attracted up by the name of Ry Cooder.
It’s a really nice listen, and although nothing so far is stunning, it’s well constructed and produced Cuban music. El Cuarto De Tula is a jolly tune, with a catchy chorus and some nice trumpet work, while Cooder’s distinctive guitar is evident on Chan Chan and Amor De Loca Juventud. But the overall feeing is of pleasant background, with nothing really attracting attention.
3* - an enjoyable listen to some nice Cuban sounds
