Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band - Safe As Milk (1967)

Updated: Apr 15, 2023

The algorithm now dictates a run of artists who have tempted me to make multiple CD purchases, so it’s the turn of the good Captain. Boot fair purchase, this and Mirror Man for a couple of quid, can’t go wrong!

This starts off as solid 60’s bluesy garage rock, and there’s a hint of the future Captain on Dropout Boogie, before slipping back into 60's doowop (similar to Zappa at the time) on I’m Glad. But then comes the moment we’ve been waiting for - Electricity, a slice of classic Beefheart, with a young Ry Cooder doing wonderful things on guitar. The second half starts brightly on Yellow Brick Road, before the wonderful Abba Zaba. However, there’s not much else that’s memorable as we head to the end of the album. Is this a case of the bar being set high by knowing what follows?

3* - a solid debut, with a couple of flashes of brilliance.
