Chick Corea - Verve Jazz Masters 3 (1993)

I first heard of Chick Corea, as the electric piano player on Miles Davis' In A Silent Way, so on seeing this compilation of his 1970s material, decided to risk a pound.

The album opens with the song You're Everything recorded as the band Return To Forever. It's the kind of song, sung by Flora Purim, which would grace any jazz cocktail bar, but not sure it's more than ordinary out of that setting. And I'm afraid, for me, there isn't much here that goes beyond the ordinary. Very listenable background, but cocktail bar jazz. There's some nice flute from Joe Farrell on Friends, and Night Streets is lively. Spain is an electric piano based on Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, as well as others, but is nowhere near as compelling as Miles Davis' interpretation, although it's brighter as it develops into a Return To Forever flute and keyboard bash. However, most of what follows is unremarkable noodling. Captain Marvel, the final track is upbeat, but no more.

For me, this was dull. Unadventurous noodling, and little which makes an impression. Nothing awful, but not for me.

2* - a disappointing listen, from someone who has worked with so many greats.
