I bought this when it was released ( a rare full price purchase) but I haven't really listened to this album by former Talking Heads' frontman as much as I should have, suggesting I wasn't immediately impressed. I've heard many say how wonderful the performance on this tour was, so definitely time to revisit.
The album opens with I Dance Like This, an interesting combination of gentle, piano accompanied verse and robotic chorus, then Gasoline And Dirty Sheets rolls along pleasantly, and Every Day Is A Miracle is a cheery, optimistic and very listenable song. Dog's Mind is a short narrative song, then This Is That is much more minimalist, with an almost oriental accompaniment, while It's Not Dark Up Here has a jerky Talking Heads-type intro before bouncing into a strong, interesting song. Bullet is another with a sparse accompaniment, a much darker song, still powerful, but the mood lightens somewhat with the jaunty Doing The Right Thing, followed by Everybody's Coming To My House, another bright exciting number. The final number is Here, slower and more moody and doesn't feel like a fitting end to a very good album.
On first listen, this was a solid three-star, but listening again, I'm leaning towards a four-star, on the basis of it definitely being a 'grower'.
4* - A lovely album of songs by Byrne, with assistance from Brian Eno
