Dirk Campbell - Music From A Round Tower (1997)

I knew Campbell (as Mont Campbell) from Egg in the early 1970s and National Health in the late 1970s, so was interested to hear his solo work, particularly as co-produced by former bandmate, Dave Stewart.

I think this was an EBay purchase, possibly from USA - it's certainly a USA produced CD

The music is a combination of MIDI samples, wind instruments, other world instruments, some voices but no lyrics. It's a CD with an overall feel, rather than trying to pick out individual tracks. So expect Celtic wind music, chant, squeaks, drones and rejoice to the sound of the kaval, bansri. gaida, tulum, daoul, saz and kemanche. I had already heard of the oud.

It's a CD of gentle, relaxing music of varying pace, generating a mood that flows by with only occasional parts which make you sit up and listen. It's not a bad CD, and I probably will revisit it, but it's not among the greats.

3* - an interesting listen in parts, without really impacting.
