I knew Frank Black as Black Francis in The Pixies, so this CD was obviously worth a punt for a quid in a charity shop. I don't recall yet listening to it, so this might well be a first listen.
From the start, it's well performed rock music, songs you can easily listen to, yet nothing that sticks. Velvety is lively, Out Of State and His Kingly Cave a little slower, while San Antonio, Tx bounces along. Bartholomew and Modern Age rock along in a more Pixies way, as does The Scene. Whiskey In Your Shoes is a lively, rocking number, and Fields of Marigold a slower finale.
There's nothing spectacular here, but all of it is a good listen.
3* - a decent enough album of songs, even if there are no stand outs.
