John Greaves - Songs (1995)

John Greaves, erstwhile bassist with Henry Cow and National Health, is a lovely bloke (or at least he was in 1978 when he took the trouble to chat to a spotty young student after a NH gig at Newcastle Poly), so on seeing this in a sale, I snapped it up.

Long relocated to Paris, Greaves opens the album with a short, gallic sounding, accordion heavy instrumental, before a series of his songs, mostly with lyrics by former Slapp Happy bandmate, Peter Blegvad.

Robert Wyatt delivers the beautiful The Song in his distinctive style, while other songs sung by S'Ange, Greaves himself, Caroline Loeb and Kristoffer Blegvad, while pleasant, aren't particularly memorable.

It's never uninteresting, but it's difficult to enthuse about most of this album.

2* - a disappointing listen, nothing bad, but little to excite.
