Lightning Seeds – Jollification (1994)

Updated: Jul 27

I go through phases with bands - I get obsessed with their music, play them to death for a bit, then get very bored, very quickly. I did that with the Lightning Seeds in the mid-1990s, buying this CD, probably just at the time when my interest was waning, and not being as impressed as I had been with Sense, their previous album.

I don't think I've listened to it this century.

But I have listened to it now, and frankly, it's not very good. There's an over-produced fuzzy lushness to the whole things and too much of it sounds too similar for me to enjoy. The hit singles Lucky You, Change & Marvellous) seem to stand head and shoulders above the rest (although I can't be the only one who's spotted the close similarity between the verses of Lucky You and Change) and only Feeling Lazy of the rest feels bright and enjoyable.

I'm sure fans of the band loved this at the time, but much of it is just too bland for these ears.

2* - a couple of bright singles, but the rest is disappointing
