Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Weld (1991)

Long recognised as one of the stronger albums in the 'live recordings' section of rock, I was delighted to pick up (Oxfam, Market Harborough, £2.99) this 2CD set from Neil and the Horse, recorded during the 1990 tour promoting the Ragged Glory album.

Of course, it's fantastic - one of the best live albums I've heard. The performance is tight, yet unrestrained. Lots of noise, lots of feedback, distortion and atmosphere, and a superb collection of Young's finest from the back catalogue.

Amongst the highlights of greats, there's Hey Hey, My My, Cinnamon Girl, F*!#in' Up, Cortez The Killer, Rockin' In The Free World, Tonight's The Night, and my personal favourite Like A Hurricane (How have England fans not somehow come up with their version 'Like A Harry Kane'?).

If I'm honest, I could live without the Crazy Horse version of Dylan's Blowin' In The Wind, even in the context of the ongoing Gulf War, and Farmer John isn't particularly inspirational, but with the bar set so high, it's not surprising that it's not all fantastic. But it's two hours of solid rock music which doesn't drag at all. Highly recommended.
