Penetration - Don't Dictate: The Best Of (1995)

Updated: Apr 15, 2023

Penetration were a band I was aware of in the punk era, but don't recall hearing much of in the early days. I did once meet a girl from Ferryhill who claimed to have sat next to Pauline Murray in domestic science lessons, but that's as far as the brush with fame goes.

This compilation contains all their five singles, none of which troubled the chart compilers, but Come Into The Open and Don't Dictate still sound fresh, while songs from their second album Coming Up For Air, seem to have aged better than earlier ones, especially Shout Above The Noise and She Is The Slave, which follow a brave and successful cover of Patti Smith's Free Money.

3* - A solid compilation which gives a flavour of one of punk's less famous bands.
