Yet another from a recent boot fair visit, new, sealed for a couple of quid. I enjoyed Pixies in the late '90s and early'00s, and was aware that they had reformed, without feeling the need to rush out and buy the new material. So this is my first exposure to their recent material.
While it's recognisably Pixies, and a decent enough listen, there really doesn't seem to be much oomph about most of the songs, and certainly nothing which matches the iconic songs from the 1980s and 1990s. The spirit of Pixies is captured at a few points - first track Nomatterday starts dark and slow before a shift in speed, and leaves the listener hopeful, and through Vault Of Heaven, I was still very positive. Dregs Of the Wine is a decent rocking number, but after that it seems to fail to maintain my interest. Thunder And Lightning is a fairly listenable poppy number, and There's A Moon On has a feel of 'old Pixies'. But while it's an album I can enjoy, there are several other Pixies albums I'll reach for in preference.
3* - Pixies' sound has moved on and I haven't. Sadly, it's lacking in great songs unlike earlier albums.
