I've already mentioned how Tangerine Dream were already there in the 1970s, and while I heard bits, it never quite got to me. Only now I'm much, much older do I hear the beauty in their electronic sound.
Last week, we visited Coventry for the first time, and made time for a visit to the 1960s cathedral, a beautiful space. I was reminded that Tangerine Dream famously played a concert there in 1975, with this album making up much of the set. So, let's give it a spin, pop pickers!
Recorded live in UK and France, Part One of the album opens with a slow droning theme, before the three note base of the piece comes in, overlain by the main electronic melody. This continues until a more repetitive theme takes over, beautifully intertwined with keyboard, even guitar like effects. Part Two opens with a gentle piano melody, joined by an ethereal / flute like tune, before drifting into a relentless electronic motif. There's a bouncy electronic interlude leading into the final quarter of the piece, where a spacy couple of minutes take us to a genlty fading conclusion.
It's probably the Tangerine Dream album I'm most familiar with, and the one I enjoy the most. If you want a place to start with Tangerine Dream, you could do much worse than this album
4* - early Tangerine Dream at their peak - just wonderful.
