The Bad Shepherds - Yan, Tyan, Tethera, Methera! (2009)

Updated: Apr 29, 2023

As I recall, I was looking to see if there might be any interesting gigs on in Liverpool coinciding with a family visit and saw The Bad Shepherds were playing at a venue in the Albert Dock.

On further investigation these were a band formed by comedian Adrian Edmondson and folk musician Troy Donockley, who played the music of Edmondson's youth - punk era classics - in a folk style, mixed in with various jigs, reels arranged by Donockley, playing pipes and whistles.

And a great gig it was - a lively crowd, bouncy music, Ade on top comedic form, and a lot of 'can you tell what it is yet?' And inevitably, we bought the CD on the way out, duly signed by the band.

It's an interesting idea, a bit of fun and no more, although it was never intended to be any more than fun. A couple of Clash covers, some Jam, PIL, Wreckless Eric, Kraftwerk, Undertones (Teenage Kicks segueing into Whisky In The Jar in a Celtic juxtaposition), Talking Heads, Squeeze, and of course, the Sex Pistols.

Nothing particularly stands out (well, perhaps Whole Wide World), but it's all a fun listen. There's certainly no song you'd listen to here in preference to the original, but that's not the point.

3* - an enjoyable CD, recalling a great evening, without getting the listener over-excited.
