Judging by the state of the CD booklet, this one was a quid at a boot fair, but the CD’s just fine.
I’m not sure what I can write about this lo-fi classic. Twelve perfectly constructed jangly (you knew that word was coming) pop songs, with simple arrangements, well produced and a very easy listen. There’s something engaging about a band who make one album, then finish. Knowing when to stop is a gift not granted to most musicians, although perhaps Lee Mavers’ alleged ‘perfectionism’ and ‘difficult to work with’ had more to do with the La’s only completing this one album, supposedly cobbled together by producer Steve Lillywhite from recording Mavers rejected as not good enough.
4* - a wonderful half hour’s listen
