The Monochrome Set were just a name in the music papers, and I didn't really hear anything of them until the wonderful Cherry Red Pillows And Prayers compilation, which contained Eine Symphonie des Grauens.
And while that wasn't one of my stand out tracks from that album, it registered enough that on seeing a Monochrome Set CD cheap in a charity shop, I didn't hesitate in finding out what I'd missed.
The album is much as I'd expected, eleven shortish, often lyrically pithy songs, which flow along, giving an enjoyable listen, without too much making a massive impression. But there are a few fantastic songs on here. Opening track Jet Set Junta is a cracker, from its spaghetti western style opening to its wonderfully caustic lyrics, while The Mating Game is sheer smutty, giggly fun. There's a couple of belters towards the end in The Midas Touch and the wonderful little ditty about upper class twits The Ruling Class. The Great Barrier Riff gives this a bouncy instrumental ending.
3* - this is a pleasant, jaunty listen, with a couple of moments of greatness
