The Ukrainians were formed by the Wedding Present’s guitarist, Peter Solowka. I remember enjoying the Wedding Present’s John Peel Ukrainian sessions, and picked this CD up cheap when I saw it.
And, as you’d expect, it’s Western rock, tinged with an Eastern European folk feel. Opening track Politika is a strong and lively start, but that doesn’t last and it becomes more Ukrainian than rock for the next few songs, springing back into life with Europa. The band rattle through the next few high tempo songs with Zillya Zelenenke a highlight, taking the pace down a bit for Ya, before finishing the album with a toe-tapper in Tsyhanochka and strangely, reading out the credits in Ukrainian (Dyakuyu I Dobranich).
3* - a solid, enjoyable listen, but not for every day.
