The Young Gods - The Young Gods (1987)

Updated: Apr 16, 2023

A Swiss industrial rock band, The Young Gods and their bleak uncompromising noise were introduced to me by a friend about 25 years ago.

This debut album (2 weeks in the Swiss charts, peaking at no 22) opens with Nous De La Lune, Franz Treichler's growl over a slow march punctuated by a tolling bell, and is a promising start. Jusqu'au Bord speeds things up and the tone is set for the next couple of songs, but the thumping and growling monotone can only hold the interest for so long.

A Gary Glitter cover Did You Miss Me is one of the more interesting tracks, a good idea in 1987, which hasn't aged well, and the original album ends with the lacklustre Si Tu Gardes. The four bonus tracks on the CD really don't add too much, although Envoye has an exciting guitar riff before the growling starts.

In all a disappointment, especially knowing they do so much more on later albums.

2* - This debut really doesn't leave this listener wanting more.
