Tracey Thorn - Record (2018)

Updated: Apr 28, 2023

I really fell for the first couple of Everything But The Girl albums (as will be evident later) but didn't follow them down their dance music route. But since then I've enjoyed both Ben and Tracey's solo albums and this 2018 album is an enjoyable listen.

It's clearly very autobiographically based, and why not? Much of it is arranged as a dance beat album, but in the better songs, Thorn's voice carries the melody so well that the dance beat accompanies rather than drives.Queen is a lovely album starter, fresh and lively, before the slower Air (complete with 1980s disco 'boop'), but many of the rest of the songs are no more than pleasant. There's no stinkers, and stand outs include Smoke, reminiscing on her family's links to London, and the bouncy, cheery Babies, a love song to motherhood and children. There's a strong finish with Dancefloor, which is very..er..dancy!

3* - even though the dance beat really isn't my thing, there's lots to enjoy on this album, and nothing to dislike.
