Arto Lindsay is an American musician, who grew up in Brazil, and much of his music shows these dual influences. I've mentioned how I first encountered him in a review of an album by his earlier band, the Golden Palominos, but I don't remember where or when I picked this album up.
Right from the start, Lindsay's soft, gentle voice sets the tone. It's a very laidback set of songs, half in Portuguese, and a very strong Latin influence throughout.
There are many restful songs like Ondina, The Prize, O Nome Dela, Tone and E Al Esqueco and others with an overtly Latin beat like Pode Filar and Interior Life. But the highlights for me are Prefeelings, where a strong Latin beat, Lindsay gently singing, much electronica and rapper Beans overlaying words; the eerie Unsure, echoey vocals over ambient electronica before a drum and bass frenzy; and the utterly gorgeous Resemblances, all the smooth of The Girl From Ipenema, with a 1990s treatment.
As a whole, this album has lots that are a decent listen, but only a couple of exceptional moments.
3* - a really pleasant album, with a couple of standouts
